Mekamui Message: No More Mining, No More Bloodshed

My latest post for the Th!nk3: Developing World competition:

Mekamui Message - No More Mining, No More Bloodshed

Clive Porabou is taking a strong message to London. When he attends the Rio Tinto Annual General Meeting on 15 April, he'll be telling them 'no more mining' on Mekanui (Bougainville Island). Bougainville Copper Limited's Panguna mine closed in 1989 after an armed struggle against the company and the government of Papua New Guinea. BCL is controlled by mining giant Rio Tinto.

Th!nk3: Flying High for the Developing World

theatre du Vaudeville

Finshed my first post since returning from the launch of the Th!nk3: Developing World blogging competition in Brussels:

In 2000 the United Nations established 8 ambitious Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for the Developing World.
The critical question being asked now:
Can journalism play a more constructive role in realising the MDG targets set for 2015, whether it be traditional mainstream media or the new online media?

World Water Day 22 March 2010

Monday 22 March 2010 was World Water Day:
It is still a reality that an estimated 1.1 billion people rely on unsafe drinking-water sources. Therefore the theme of World Water Day 2010 is focusing on raising awareness of water quality under the theme "Clean Water for a Healthy World". IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre offers a wide selection of documents looking at the different aspects of water quality such as water treatment, health and technology. This information is for instance, available via the IRC digital library, the Source Newsletter and on the IRC web site.

Juliet Willetts, Research Director at Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney, posted about her concerns in the developing world:
As long as the issues in life that most concern women and girls are ignored, we deny these women both the basic tools for physical survival as well as the chance to a better life, free of all sorts of oppression.
Ignore water, ignore women
Unfortunately some commenters focused on so-called feminism ideology in her remarks rather than the issues raised.
