The same idea was to have put forward before the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002, but died before it could be completed. Called the Mining And Minerals Sustainable Development (MMSD) initiative, it was sponsored by global mining companies and involved extensive consultations. As the results of these consultations came in, it started to dawn on the industry that what was called for was more than cosmetic changes. This is why it was closed down. Industry, having the 'benefit' of this experience will ensure that next time round expectations will be kept low.
